DeVos Institute leads Maximizing Board Productivity and The Board-Staff Partnership Intensive, April 05 in Fort Lauderdale, FL

January 25, 2024

The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland, a global leader in arts management training and consultation, is pleased to announce a one-day intensive for arts managers and their boards.

The Intensive will take place April 05, 2024, in-person at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, FL, or online with pre-registration. The Intensive is open to staff and board members from arts and cultural organizations nationwide.

Led by Institute Chairman Michael M. Kaiser, and Institute President Brett Egan, this opportunity is open on a first-come basis to board members and staff leadership (executive and programmatic) of non-profit arts, culture, education, and media organizations in the United States and around the world. The Intensive is most relevant to organizations in the following disciplines:

  • Performing and visual arts;
  • Education (including schools) and arts education (in the non-profit arts and culture setting);
  • Non-profit film and media;
  • History, science, and education (museums and centers);
  • Literary; and
  • Other cultural non-profits that require strong marketing and fundraising, including gardens, libraries, multi-tenant cultural facilities, and crafts (glass, print, etc.).

A Board’s productivity and a joyful Board-Staff relationship are central to the success of thriving non-profit organizations.

As managers and trustees, we work every day to improve these important functions.

But success can often seem elusive. Why?

In this day-long, interactive working session, DeVos Institute Chairman Michael M. Kaiser and President Brett Egan will address critical challenges facing Board and Staff leadership in today’s complex environment, and offer breakthrough strategies to improve Board productivity and support for this critical working relationship.

Participants will leave the session with new strategies in the areas of:

  • The five non-negotiable responsibilities of a high-functioning Board
  • The role of the Chair and other Board Leadership
  • Long-term artistic and program planning – the foundation of organizational and Board success
  • How Board and Staff members can work together to promote organizational visibility amongst buyers and donors
  • Roles for Board and Staff Leadership in effective fundraising
  • How to envision the "ideal" Board of the future – and plan to implement it
  • The nuts and bolts of determining an appropriate and doable “give or get” policy
  • Means to identify, recruit, and onboard effective and happy new members
  • The roles of Board and Staff members in long-term strategic planning and its implementation

Throughout the Intensive, DeVos Institute Senior Consultants will moderate a chat room online to respond to additional questions in real time.

Designed as a working session to facilitate constructive, productive group learning and strategy development, participants can expect to leave the Intensive with new strategies to implement on day one. For this reason, it is encouraged – although not required – that both board and staff leadership attend the Intensive together.
